Folkestone Coastal 10K 2019 Enjoys Excellent Turnout

Published on May 30th, 2019

Over 700 runners took part in the 8th Folkestone Coastal 10K run on Sunday 26 May. Decent weather over the bank holiday weekend also encouraged plenty of , spectators who lined the route, contributing to make a great atmosphere. Runners took part from clubs across Kent, with some coming from much further afield, including London and even Glasgow. The men’s winner Tom Millard and ladies’ winner Becky Morrish achieved times of 34:05. And 40:17 respectively. There was also a children’s race, won by Thomas Calendar (boys) and Caitlin Hancock (girls).

Folkestone Coastal 10K, established in 2012, takes a route starting at Folkestone seafront, heads towards Hythe on the traffic-free, flat promenade and then returns by the same route, taking in some beautiful coastal scenery on the way. This means it is a great race for those who are relatively new to running and for more experienced runners perhaps looking to establish a personal “best”. The event was conceived with the objectives of encouraging participation in sport, raising funds for charities and promoting and celebrating Folkestone as a great place to live and visit.

Indications are that the 2018 fundraising total of £35,000 will be surpassed, meaning that donations can be made to a variety of local projects that will include The Rainbow Centre, Gurkha Memorial Fund, Folkestone Youth Project, Green Kordofan and Touchbase Care. Participants are also encouraged to raise money for their own chosen charities.

As in previous years, Folkestone Coastal 10K 2019 was organised by Ray Johnson, with help to provide stewards and marshals coming from Folkestone Running Club and the Rotary Clubs of Hythe, Channel & Folkestone. The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust provided a grant to help towards the cost of organising the event, and sponsors included Metroline Security, Independent Insurance, East Kent College Group, Tru Gym, Folkestone Hoteliers Association, The Cliffe Restaurant and Pod Plus.
