Poet Laureate Verse for Road of Remembrance
The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust has agreed to fund an installation on the wall above newly planted rosemary bushes on Folkestone’s Road of Remembrance. The installation will incorporate an inscription of a verse specially selected by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy CBE from her poem “An Unseen”, first published in 2013. Work will be complete by 4 August, in time for the commemorations in Folkestone of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1, which will be attended by Prince Harry.
The illustration shows an impression of the new installation; the rosemary bushes have been planted since the image was prepared.
The verse that will be inscribed reads:
Down the quiet road, away, away, towards the dying time,
Love went, brave soldier, the song dwindling;
walked to the edge of absence; all moments going,
gone; bells through rain
to fall on the carved names of the lost.
