In 2011, the Roger De Haan Charitable Trust supported the establishment of Academy FM, a charity community radio station based in the Folkestone Academy school. It focuses on educational and community work, promotes local events and supports local businesses. The charity provides training and experience for people of all ages from all over Folkestone.
The initial funding enabled construction of the studios and funding for the equipment needed. Since then, the RDHCT has continued to support the award-winning Academy FM with grants towards the costs of station management and maintaining equipment.
Academy FM’s educational programme works with children, young people and adults, either individually, in groups or whole schools. Training is in studios, classrooms and out in our community. The charity has trained hundreds of people to broadcast. Projects have covered literacy, employability, the arts, science, the environment, heritage, mental health and other subjects.
