Harbour Ward Residents’ Association formed a plan to develop community allotments in the area of Folkestone’s East Cliff adjacent to the Stade Steps. The area was overgrown and unattractive, and was plagued with antisocial behaviour. The Residents’ Association saw an opportunity to transform the area into a community garden, with individual plots available for cultivation by local organisations and by individuals. Substantial ground work had to be undertaken to make the site viable and secure, but the area now provides a valuable and attractive place for local people to grow flowers, fruit and vegetables, whilst offering superb views over the harbour and Channel beyond. The nearby St Peter’s Primary School has taken on two of the plots, and the area has been fully subscribed since completion in early 2012.
RDHCT was pleased to help fund this project, which also received support from East Folkestone Together, Folkestone Town Council and a councillor grant from Kent County Councillor Roland Tolputt.
