Hythe Town Band

Community and Young People

In 2012 Hythe Town Concert Band needed to find a new home in which to store equipment and insturments, following the decision to develop the band’s previous HQ at Fisherman’s Beach in Hythe. The solution came in the form of an offer by Saltwood CE Primary School to build a new pvilion in their school grounds.

The pavilion fund was begun with a £10,000 bequest from the late Peter Selby, who was a band member for 25 years. Other contributions to the overall cost, which was in the region of £27,000, came from KCC members’ community grant scheme, Waitrose, and the Hythe Institute Fund. RDHCT made a grant of £5000. Hythe Town Band also maintains a training band, which aims to encourage young people to learn to play wind instruments through playing together in an ensemble.

The official opening, in June 2012, was conducted by Hythe Town Mayor, Cllr David Owen, and invited guests included friends and family of the band and training band, Hythe Town Councillor John Schoner and Cllr Jenny Hollingsbee, Chairman of Shepway District Council, who helped to finance the new building.
