Zalan Paksy and Jane Glanida, volunteers at Varne Watersports Club, were presented with a Royal Yachting Association “Outstanding Contribution Award” at the annual RYA Awards ceremony in London at the end of November.

The New Romney couple received their award in recognition for their contribution to watersports from President of the RYA HRH The Princess Royal, as pictured here. They were among a number of volunteers from across the UK to be recognised for their achievements. The RYA Awards are presented to outstanding individuals or groups nominated by their sailing clubs or associations and selected by the RYA Awards Panel.

Zalan is the Commodore at the Varne club, which is affiliated to the Shepway Sports Trust and has received financial support from The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust to fund equipment and infrastructure. Jane is the Safeguarding Officer and First Aider. The couple’s children are also involved, reflecting the friendly family atmosphere at the club that has been a major factor in increasing membership. The growing range of activities at the club has encouraged increasing numbers of people to access water sport activities.

The RYA is the national body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating. The organisation has over 100,000 personal members, most of whom engage in recreational, non-competitive activities on either coastal or inland water, and an estimated further half million boat owners are affiliated via an associate member boat club, such as the Varne Watersports Club.

Speaking at the Awards ceremony, RYA Director of Sport Development Alistair Dickson said: “Volunteers are the lifeblood of our sport. All of the stories behind these special people have been truly inspiring to hear and it’s really an honour to be able to say thank you and celebrate their amazing achievements.”
